Drooling... literally... over My Peranakan Spice Box

On Monday... Me and JW pop over to... Toa Payoh... opposite HDB Hub... for dinner at My Peranakan Spice Box...

This was our 2nd time... we stumbled upon it by chance a few months back... it was almost closing... many items were sold out... we just had their desserts...  Chendol... was yummy... thanks to the good gula melaka... the pulot hitam was just average...

We have been wanting to try it again for their cooked dishes... the long hiatus was due to  JW's extremely busy work schedule....

Simple peranakan fare... nothing comparable to the authentic big names like Guan Hoe Soon or PeraMakan... just mentioning the names make my mouth drool...

JW and I are both lovers of Peranakan food... we have alway wanted to visit Malacca... where Peranakan originates... to eat, eat and eat again... just never got around to it... maybe year end...

Most of My Peranakan Spice Box 40 plus items... are one dish... value for money offerings of like... served with rice... babi ponteh, beef rendang, honey chicken... nasi lemak with ayam rendang, mee siam, laksa, papaya soup, chap chai, kaya toast etc...

No assam fish head or ayam buah keluah here... but they do have a buah keluah toast... which although sounds and looks interesting... I was not tempted... To me... ayam buah keluah is almost 'scraced' and should not be 'dessicrated' in such manner...

Their peranakan 'essential' crabmeat and pork ball soup was pretty tasty... with generous 'huge' meat balls and a flavourful clear broth... The nasi lemak was nicely done too... the drumstick was tender, the gravy was thick and fragrant...  the coconut rice... yellow in color???... was cooked just right... the sambal billis was sweet and spicy... the mee siam... served with 2 breaded fried prawns... ???... was alright... we had sago gula melaka and chendol for dessert... the gula melaka again did not disappoint...

The prices are very affordable... starting at just S$3.50 for the nasi lemak...

So if you... live around the neighbourhood and is craving for peranakan... am not the must eat the true authentic type... this place will help ease the crave...
